Hey Matadors,
It is great to be in contact with you. Every year I enjoy learning about my students and I love watching them grow and become independent young adults. I wish you all the best and hope I can help you with what you need to succeed. My hope is that you all (parents and students) have a fabulous year. Together we can make that happen!
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college-readiness international program designed to increase the number of students who graduate with college and career readiness skills. Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. The formula is simple - raise expectations of students and they will rise to the challenge.
Not only are you enrolled in tough classes, such as honors and Advanced Placement, but also in the AVID elective. For one period a day, you will learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enriching and motivational activities, that make college seem attainable. Your self-image will improve, and you will become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.
Students are expected to represent the AVID program in a responsible manner. AVID students are expected to be role models and maintain a positive attitude on Bolsa Grande High School’s campus. The students’ hard work and INDIVIDUAL determination will be the deciding factor in the students’ success in the program. The goal of the AVID teacher, AVID parent and AVID student is that the student becomes a competitively eligible candidate for the four-year university of their choice.
THIS CLASS WILL BE WHAT YOU, THE STUDENTS, MAKE OF IT. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PUT FORTH YOUR BEST EFFORT. REMEMBER THAT YOU, AS AN INDIVIDUAL, DETERMINE YOUR OWN SUCCESS AND YOUR OWN FUTURE.
Have a great year, and if you ever need anything please let me know. =)
